Anthony Ling est le propriétaire de l'unique boutique de vêtements de Tenpenny Tower, New Urban Apparel, et l'un des résidents de la tour dans Fallout 3. Il est l'un des nombreux personnages ouvertement gay du jeu, représentant l'exact opposé du bourru Shrapnel ou Flak.

Présentation

Propriétaire de la meilleure (et unique) boutique de vêtements de Tenpenny Tower, Ling propose une sélection de tenues d'avant-guerre récupérées au fil des années.[Non-jeu 1] Il fait la publicité de son commerce auprès des visiteurs de la tour, les invitant à « rafraîchir leur look » chez New Urban Apparel ;[5] il est convaincu que chaque résident de Tenpenny Tower mérite de vivre dans le luxe, en raison de son intelligence, de sa beauté et/ou de sa richesse. Pour lui, c'est tout simplement la survie du plus apte, et il fait partie des gagnants. À ce titre, il s'oppose fermement à laisser Roy Phillips et ses goules entrer dans la tour. Il les considère comme moins qu'humains, les qualifiant de monstres qui dévorent leurs propres enfants, et refuse même d'envisager de cohabiter avec eux.[6][7]

Dans l'ensemble, il correspond parfaitement au profil des résidents snobs et privilégiés de la tour. Ling préconise la « thérapie par le shopping » comme remède à tous les problèmes : il conseille à Margaret Primrose d'acheter de nouveaux vêtements plutôt que de broyer du noir (et cela à quelqu'un qu'il considère comme une amie),[8][9] et recommandant à Tiffany Cheng qu'une nouvelle robe vaut mieux que « n'importe quel médicament prescrit par le Doc Banfield ».[10] Il tente même de convaincre Banfield de se soumettre à un relooking complet,[11] irrité par son attachement aux blouses intemporelles (ou haillons, selon les termes de Ling).[12] De son côté, Anthony n'est pas disposé à rendre la pareille à Banfield et refuse de passer des examens médicaux réguliers, à moins d'être réellement malade. Il semble avoir une aversion pour le contact des instruments en métal sur sa peau.[13]

Sa relation la plus intéressante est peut-être celle qu'il entretient avec Lydia Montenegro. Les deux commerçants s'échangent des piques qui pourraient aisément passer pour de la véritable animosité (Ling allant jusqu'à appeler la boutique de Montenegro un « magasin d'antiquités », à quoi elle répond en qualifiant ses tenues d'« atroces » et en lui reprochant de radoter). Cependant, les joutes verbales de Ling et ses réponses mélodramatiques trahissent qu'il ne s'agit que de taquineries.[14] Leurs échanges peuvent devenir cinglants, voire grotesques : Ling est enclin à inventer de nouveaux mots (tel « classieuseté »), ce que Lydia s'empresse de relever, ou à se moquer de son comportement stéréotypé et efféminé, ou encore de ses traits physiques (comme une silhouette en forme de poire).[15]

Ling est enclin à draguer les agents de sécurité de Tenpenny Tower, multipliant les avances plus ou moins subtiles. Aucun d'eux ne répond favorablement à ses tentatives,[1] ce qui ne l'empêche pas de faire des remarques suggestives jusqu'au chef Gustavo lui-même. Gustavo n'en veut pas non plus,[2] et l'insistance de Ling a fini par exaspérer le chef, qui avertit régulièrement Anthony que son fusil est chargé, que le cran de sécurité est désactivé, et qu'il serait désolé s'il venait à partir accidentellement dans sa direction.[3]

Malgré son exubérance et ses tentatives de séduction, certains résidents ignorent son homosexualité. Irving Cheng, qui sollicite ses conseils pour paraître plus séduisant aux yeux de sa femme,[16] ignore totalement que Ling n'est pas du tout attiré par les femmes.[4] Tiffany Cheng n'apprécie pas Ling, principalement parce qu'il se mêle de ses affaires et tente constamment de lui vendre de nouvelles tenues.[17] Ling se moque des deux époux à cause de leurs problèmes conjugaux.[18] Une autre personne ignorant son orientation est, étonnamment, Millicent Wellington, la commère attitrée de la tour. Bien qu'elle consigne les allées et venues de chaque résident, Wellington pense que Ling devrait simplement trouver une gentille femme et s'installer.[19]
