Le Guide de survie des Terres désolées est l'une des récompenses de la quête "Survivre aux Terres Désolées". Il n'a pas d'autre but que de servir d'objet de fin de quête. En plus de celui donné au Vagabond Solitairee à la fin de la quête, des exemplaires supplémentaires peuvent être trouvés en possession de vagabonds lors d'une rencontre aléatoire qui se produisent après la fin de la quête. Il est beaucoup plus grand qu'un livre ordinaire. En 2281, il a gagné en popularité et s'est retrouvé à l'ouest, dans le désert de Mojave. En 2287, il a été apporté jusqu'au Commonwealth, où il a été imprimé en plusieurs exemplaires.

La description du livre est composée de quatre sections, qui changent en fonction de la qualité du livre et du ton dans lequel il a été écrit. Chaque mission est assortie d'un objectif bonus, le fait de remplir les trois objectifs bonus d'un chapitre signifie que celui-ci est "complet", tandis que le fait d'en manquer un seul signifie qu'il est "incomplet". La description du livre peut ne pas correspondre à l'aptitude d'Expert en survie reçu, car le fait d'accomplir deux objectifs par chapitre donnera toujours la pire description possible, mais permettra de gagner l'aptitude de rang moyen.
Caractéristiques
La plupart des sections ne sont déterminées que par le nombre de chapitres complets, et non par les chapitres eux-mêmes, aussi chaque chapitre a-t-il été organisé en fonction de ce nombre.
